A Fresh Perspective On The Radiation Ruckus

The recent tragedies in Japan have many of us in panic mode over the potential nuclear fall out. I would like to encourage everyone to take a few slow breaths with me. We can delve into some ways to protect the thyroid and build a strong system to combat even horrific poisoning without the need for scare tactics. I hope we all remember to expend our energy helping those who are actually suffering in this crisis rather than trying to figure out how to protect ourselves from some imagined future catastrophe. Let us be prudent, so as not to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous salesmen due to our emotions. After all, we can not buy safety.

A Holistic Health Coach’s job is to be a “guide on the side, not a sage on the stage”.We spend a large chunk of our time studying bodies and how what we put into them affects us mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. It is my intention to use this information to help you better understand long term ways to protect yourself and your family from toxicity. I am not a doctor or “medical professional” so please do your own research or consult with your medical practioners in order to verify anything you read here.

Before we get into recommendations, let’s get a few things out of the way. We had over 500 nuclear detonations inside the United States between 1945 and 1958. 500. On our own soil. Whatever we end up seeing after this Japanese tragedy plays out will not be close to the contamination we caused then. Also, most “worst case scenario” reports say the fallout would go about 2,000 miles out from Japan even with the jet stream etc. The West Coast is 5,000 miles or so from Japan. Does that mean we are safe from all effects? No idea, but I doubt it. What it does mean is we can safely step away from our credit cards and gas masks, look at some more long term solutions and hopefully, rethink our own nuclear situation.

For now, let’s just take another breath. Deep slow breaths are the entryway to health and vitality. As simple as it sounds, this technique alone is going to offer your body the relaxed state it needs to stay balanced and begin to heal. Our gut makes up a large portion of our immune system, it also regulates our emotions. Our emotions and immunity are intimately linked. Stress causes hormonal responses that shut down proper immune function. This is a vital component to good health. If you are under stress, supplementation is not going to be as effective, if at all. Tulsi ( Holy Basil) is an excellent tonic for stress reduction, particularly when used in conjunction with breath work and meditation. Turning off the TV and shock radio can work wonders as well.

For more information on how stress affects your immune system see this article:

A more in depth analysis:

why_thyroid_important_1_180x135Here are some ways to protect yourself and your thyroid against radiation according to David Wolfe:

kelp, ginseng, ashwaganda (recently found to regrow nerves), chlorella, zeolites, fulvic acid, nascent iodine, reishi mushroom, sea salt (also salty miso), botanical (plant-derived) or lipo-vitamin C, magnesium (chlorophyll), selenium (brazil nuts), coconut butter (coconut products), Megahydrate.

Iodine rich recipes for protecting your thyroid:

Foods that help the thyroid:
yellow vegetables, eggs, carrots, and dark green vegetables, fish and sea vegetables such as: arame, kelp, dulse, hijike, nori, wakame, and kombu, beef (range free), oatmeal, chicken (range free), seafood, dried beans, bran, tuna, spinach, seeds, and nuts, organ meats (range free), eggs, yeast, legumes, nuts, and raisins, radishes, chloryphyll from veggie juice.

My personal plan of action is to continue to nourish my body in the following ways:

~quality salt (this is one of the easiest ways to improve your diet. Celtic gray and Himalayan Pink are both full of important minerals. White table salt is like poison for your body with no nutrient value.)
~lots of organic fruits and veggies of every color, especially green.
~sea weeds (I use my homemade gourmet gomasio mix with 5 seaweeds, 2 kinds of sesame seeds, Celtic sea salt, and a variety of other seeds in just about everything that comes through my kitchen. It adds a nice texture and salty flavor that blends easily with most dishes that aren’t sweet. It also provides vital minerals and nutrients, and is protective and nourishing to the thyroid. Keep your eyes peeled, It may be available commercially soon!)
~Kefir every day
~Other fermented beverages like Kvass, coconut kefir or kombucha
~organic pasture rasied eggs
~occasional pasture raised, grass fed, organic beef and bison
~cultured vegetables
~other nutrient dense foods ala Nourishing Traditions
~Reishi/ cordyceps tincture
~fermented cod liver and butter oil suppliment
~lots of unprocessed coconut products
~ghee, duck fat or coconut oil for sauteeing ( cut refined veggie and trans fatty oils)
~endless cups of herbal, green and white tea
~I also bottle tonic drinks every other day or so with master cleanse lemonade, adaptagenic herbal elixirs, and all kinds of nervous system balancing tinctures.

seaweed_salad_trio_380x285This is not a to do list. You can slowly incorporate these things (as your tastes dictate) to prepare your body for defense against all toxins- radioactive or otherwise.

Let us all send our prayers and thoughts to the people of Japan during this terrible ordeal. May you each be Happy, Healthy and at Peace.
